View of Hopedale House

Negative no.A186. 1903-1906. Image depicts a four-story wooden boarding house. The building has three chimneys visible from this angle and a lightning rod. Shutters have been installed at some of the windows, but the far left side appears to be still under construction. No windows or shutters have been installed on that side, and there are two ladders leaning against the porch roof. (Notes in the accession folder indicate the boardinghouse was "doubled" which may account for the unfinished aspects of it.) A front porch runs the length of the building. The sign "Hopedale House," which can be seen in Box 22, Negative 343 and Negative 344 has not yet been installed, all of which suggests a date closer to 1903 than 1905, the date for both Negative 343 and Negative 344. A fire escape is visible on the right-hand end of the building. Note the laundry hanging on lines in the back yard on the right. A few bare trees are visible, possibly just planted. Founders of the Draper Company, brothers George and Ebenezer Draper were responsible for creating the integrated, planned community of Hopedale with innovative employee housing and recreational spaces, in addition to employment.
