January 7, 1904 is the date of the autograph manuscript from which this typescript was made, but the copy itself was made by or for Stanislaus Joyce ca. 1928. These pages are missing from the Yale manuscript of a chapter of Stephen Hero (Slocum E3bii) and from the edition published by New Directions (New York, 1955). Scholes 36.

Opposite each of these words is a phrase or sentence for which the word is to stand. The code is continued on the upper half of the verso. Scholes 40.
