BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
The magazine "$pread: Illuminating the Sex Industry” provided an independent platform for the ideas, writing, and artwork of sex workers and those who support their rights from 2004 to 2011. Rachel Aimee co-founded it with Rebecca Lynn and Raven Strega and served as the editor-in-chief for four and a half years. The magazine had an editorial policy of not taking positions on issues. It succeeded at building distribution for its print copies at a time when a lot of media was shifting to online access. While self-sustaining, it did not generate enough revenue to pay its creators other than occasional commissions for the sale of advertisements. In 2005, $pread won the Utne Independent Press Award for Best New Title, and in 2015, the Feminist Press issued an anthology of selected work from the magazine along with perspective on its history and extended impact.
