Although the records came from the Cytology Laboratory, the bulk of the records are papers belonging to Charlotte Street. The records have been divided into two series: Speeches and Reprints (1948-1970) and Miscellaneous (1947-1971).

Biographical / Historical
Charlotte Street was born in 1909. She received a B. S. from Elmira College in Elmira, N. Y. in 1931. She received additional training in medical technology at Brooks Hospital in Brookline, MA in 1931-1932. In 1934, she joined the staff of the Department of Anatomy at Cornell University Medical College where she worked with Dr. Papanicolaou on his research on cytological method of cancer diagnosis and his research that led to the development of the Pap Smear. Street assisted in the development of staining and other technical procedures for Exfoliative Cytology. In 1947, she was the teaching supervisor of cytology training in Exfoliative Cytology conducted at the Papanicolaou Cytology Laboratory. In 1955, she was the teaching assistant at the Department of Pathology. In 1962, she was the supervisor of the Cytology Laboratory until her retirement in 1974. She died on June 21, 1985.
The Papanicolaou Cytology Laboratory began in the Department of Anatomy where Dr. Papanicolaou conducted his research on cytologic methods of diagnosing cancer and his work that led to the development of the Pap Smear. In 1947, Dr. Papanicolaou established a cytology technicians training program in Exfoliative Cytology in the laboratory. When Dr. Papanicolaou retired in 1962, the laboratory was transferred to the New York Hospital and resided on the 22nd floor of the main hospital building. Dr. John Seybolt was the director of the laboratory.
