Scope and Content Note
The Harry Isaac Johnston, MD Papers consists of a student handbook for the academic year 1900–1901 and a 1902 commencement program. The handbook is the Cornell University Medical College “Students’ Hand-Book of New York City (Boroughs of Manhattan and Bronx.) 1900–1901” (New York: Intercollegiate Young Men’s Christian Association of New York City, 1900); it includes Johnston’s signature and is hand-dated “1902,” the year of his graduation. The handbook further contains annotations marking specific sections and notes concerning Johnston’s schedule and medical observations, including some identifying patients by name. The handbook also includes a city directory, which was aimed at the needs of the medical students at the time, and includes a fold-out map of New York City. The commencement program is from Johnston’s graduation on June 4, 1902, which includes his name handwritten on the first page and printed in the list of MD recipients.

Administrative/Biographical Note
Harry Isaac Johnston, MD was a graduate of Cornell University Medical College (CUMC, Class of 1902) and worked as a general practitioner in New York. He was born in Ovid, New York, in 1876. Johnston took his first two years of medical coursework at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and his final two years at CUMC in New York City, graduating with an MD in 1902. He first found employment at St. Luke’s Hospital and then continued working as a general practitioner throughout his life.
He married Mary Helen Alexander, a nurse he’d met at CUMC, and had three daughters: Ruth, Helen, and Mary Louise. Johnston passed away in 1955.
