Black and white image shows a sliver ("rope of fibers") of cotton being formed from a picker lap ("compressed sheet of cotton . rolled under pressure into a cylindrical package") by a revolving flat card (a machine that spins the picker lap to separate fibers into "individual relationship[s]"). Item 2: Carded cotton sliver, 1916

Gelatin silver print. Black and white image shows many carded cotton slivers (cotton "ropes" that have gone through a carding machine) standing in roving cans, which are about three feet high. The cotton card delivers the slivers into the roving cans, which should more accurately be termed sliver cans.
