Biographical / Historical

Pittsburgh, PA was at the center of a working-class protest that rocked the United States in 1877. Railroads were the most powerful companies at this time in history. In order to protect profits, railroads reduced workers wages by about ten percent and reduced their workforce. On July 16, a strike started in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and spread from St. Louis and Chicago to New York and Baltimore - Pittsburgh joined in on July 19. The rest of the city's working-class, newspapers and most government employees sympathized with the strikers. This is a collection of accounts of the strike.
