 Collection
Identifier: 5096

Scope and Contents

This is a transcript of a hearing before the N.Y.S. Board of Mediation and Arbitration composed of Henry C. Johnson, chairman, W. H.H. Webster and William Purcell with Thomas A. Braniff as secretary*. Under the provisions of Chapter 415 of the Laws of 1897 the Board was empowered to investigate and make public the facts in a labor dispute. The Board began its investigation on February 27, 1899 as a result of an anonymous letter which it received. The company had discharged two foremen, one with twenty, the other with fifteen years service and hired a new man. Mr. McLaughlin immediately introduced price cuts and began treating the man in a very abusive manner with the results that the men walked out. Several other unions in New York boycotted the products of the company when it replaced the strikers with non-union men.
