Biographical / Historical
Shirley Bob was born in 1918. She had polio at about age 5, leaving her with permanent partial facial paralysis. In 1940, she completed a BS at Barnard College and had enrolled in a Master's of Education program at Columbia University Teachers College. She applied to the New York City Board of Education for a license to teach high school science. In applying for the license she disclosed the paralysis which was considered a disability. The Board of Education approved her application "in view of compensatory traits."
