Biographical / Historical
The Montgomery Worsted Mills, known today as Montgomery Mills, is along the Wallkill River at the end of Factory Street in the Orange County village of Montgomery, New York. It was one of the earliest efforts to harness the river for industrial purposes.
Located on the site of a previous mill, it was purchased in 1880 by Arthur Patchett and William Crabtree, who changed it from a weaving to a spinning mill. Suffering from financial hardship during the Great Depression it was purchased by the Steinberger family in the 1930s. It remained a spinning mill through the middle of the 20th Century, when it was transfered to hydroelectric power generation. In 2018, it was sold to Michael Dorf for a location of a new City Winery resturant.
