Biographical / Historical

The Lowell Textile School opened on October 4, 1897 and was modeled on the success of the Polytechnical School at Philadelphia. The school originally opened in three rented rooms on Middle Street in downtown Lowell. The college offered three year diplomas in cotton or wool manufacture, design, or textile chemistry and dyeing.

In 1929, with an expanded textile cirrculum and additional faculty, the name was changed to the Lowell Textile Institute.

In 1953, with the decline of the textile industry in Massachusetts, new areas of plastics, leather, paper, and electronics technology were added and the name was changed to the Lowell Technical Institute. The textile program was closed entirely in 1971.

In 1975, it was merged with Lowell State College to form the University of Lowell. It changed its name in 1991 to the University of Massachusetts Lowell and today is known as the North Campus of UMass Lowell.
