Biographical / Historical

The Uxbridge Cotton Mills were incorporated in 1840 occupying the former Crown and Eagle Mills. In 1849 it was sold to P. Whitin and Sons. James F. Whitin bought it in 1864 and became treasurer. Five years before it closed down in 1923 he changed the name to James Whitin, Inc. In 1874 the company had 10,000 spindles in operation producing sheetings and shirtings. By 1921 the number of machines had increased to 410 looms and 18,000 spindles.
