Scope and Contents
The Townsend, Gowdy & Company Records is a volume of incoming correspondence and invoices for goods and services purchased by the company pasted in. Much of the correspondence is from the office of Wisner H. Townsend in New York City, manufacturer of Walden shawls, beaver cloths and floor oil cloth, and importer of Canton mattings, etc. Other correspondents include wool commission merchants and brokers Walter Brown & Son, Mauger and Avery, and Dike Brothers, all of New York City; as well as Ranken & Co., Troy, NY; and Samuel Lee & Co., Philadelphia. Invoices are for parts and machinery, dye woods and dyestuffs, shoddy, etc., and encompass a wide variety of companies in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. Included are New York Rubber Co.; Tully, Davenport & Co.; J.R. Montgomery & Co.; Stephen Ballard & Co.; Sumner Pratt & Co., etc.
