Scope and Contents
The Oliver H. Moulton Papers includes two travel diaries of Alice Moulton Bartlett from a trip to England and Europe in 1890. The diaries were gifts to her parents and to her husband and contain many of her watercolor illustrations. Also contains travel correspondence from England and Europe, 1890 and 1895, mainly from Oliver Moulton to his family, especially to son-in-law Austin Chadwick. General correspondence, 1856-1939, of Oliver Moulton and other family members contains comments about cotton manufacturing, mills in Lawrence and Lowell, the finances of the Pemberton Mill, Moulton's career at Hamilton Manufacturing, and various personal business ventures. Also contains family photographs, newspaper clippings, including obituaries and testimonials to Oliver Moulton and information about Lowell, MA, and a diploma, 1854, of Miranda Jordan from the Maine Female Seminary, Gorham, ME.

Biographical / Historical
Oliver Moulton (1829-1907) was born in Dover, NH. After the death of his father, the family moved to Saco, ME and Moulton began his career in the textile industry at the Pepperell Manufacturing Co., Biddeford, ME. He moved to Lawrence, MA, to be the overseer of the Pemberton Mills, 1854-1859, and then became superintendent of the Amoskeag mills in Manchester, N.H., 1859-1864. Finally he became the agent and general manager, 1864-1905, of the Hamilton Manufacturing Co., a cotton manufacturer and print works in Lowell, MA. He married Miranda Olive Jordan (1835-1895) of Saco, ME.; they had two children, Julia May Leonard Moulton (1863-1962) and Alice Maud Moulton (1867-1956). Julia Moulton married Austin K. Chadwick and Alice Moulton married Henry Bartlett.
