Scope and Contents

The Lawrence Manufacturing Company Records includes a letter, April 27, 1892, to John Kilburn, company agent, from Harry A. Brown describing the status of titles of the company to its private ways; a letter, January 4, 1896, to C.P. Baker, company treasurer, from James [B. Francis], Proprietors of Locks and Canals on Merrimack River, about the title to a street; and another letter, April 15, 1897, to Baker from Franklin Nourse, company agent, about purchases of land. Also includes a memo, October 13, 1898, from W.E. Badger, Assistant Engineer of the Proprietors of Locks and Canals, about the company's right to close various parts of private streets; this is accompanied by a plan entitled: Data Relating to Sales of Land, Proprietors of Locks and Canals to Lawrence Manufacturing Co., October 11, 1898.

Biographical / Historical

Lawrence Manufacturing Company was a cotton manufacturer in Lowell, MA, with offices in Boston. Established in 1828 and incorporated in 1831, it originally manufactured sheetings. After the Civil War, it manufactured hosiery, knitwear, underwear and yarn. C. Brooks Stevens purchased the company in 1926. In the 1930's, the company began to manufacture wide knit goods only. In 1946, it became a division of the Ames Textile Corp.
