Biographical / Historical
In 1834, William G. Johnson purchased a woolen mill from Nathan Comstock in Uncasville, a locality in Montville, CT. He expanded the mill and adapted it for the extraction of dye from logwood and camwood. The mill passed to Johnson's sons in the 1870's. The company apparently went out of business after 1901. Before coming to Connecticut, Johnson operated a mercantile business in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 1830 to 1834. He exported hides to his brother Charles in New York, and imported liquor, wine, butter, tea and other goods into Argentina.
