Scope and Contents

The C. G. Sargent's Sons Records includes records of the company and personal papers of C.G. Sargent. Contains information on patents, 1840-1918; patent correspondence, 1868-1923; notebooks of Allen G. Sargent, 1875, 1879; an information file, 1860-1890, with brochures, catalogs, etc., from suppliers, competitors, and customers; incoming general correspondence, 1854-1914; and outgoing general correspondence, 1857-1900.

Financial records include annual inventories, 1857-1858, 1875-1880; trial balances, 1869-1912; journals, 1861-1921; ledgers, 1856-1921; daybooks, 1854-1878, 1904-1908; and cashbooks, 1856-1912. Also includes financial information of C.G. Sargent, 1850-1880. Contains bills and receipts, 1851-1884; order books, 1857-1908; payrolls, 1864-1884, 1895-1901; inventories, 1908-1917.

Collection contains records of Chauncy Mills, located in Graniteville and making worsted hosiery. Includes general business correspondence, 1877-1878; annual inventories, 1875-1878; a ledger, journal, daybook, and cashbook, 1878-1883.

Collection also contains records, 1900-1920, of James M. Sargent Co. of Graniteville, which manufactured parts for automobiles; records, 1866-1879, of the Stony Brook Water Power Co., of Westford, MA, incorporated in 1866 by C.G. Sargent and others to maintain reservoirs in Westford; and a journal, 1864-1870, of Barlow Combing Co., located in Graniteville.

Biographical / Historical

C.G. Sargent's Sons was a textile machinery manufacturing corporation that operated from 1852 to 1990 in Granite, a neighborhood of Westford, MA. Just ten miles from Lowell, Westford was the perfect location for Sargent (a former employee of the Lowell Mills machine shop) to establish his own business.
