Scope and Contents
Ames Textile Corporation Records includes a report entitled: Whittier Mills, Standard Cost Computations, October 28, 1952, about yarn costs. The Whittier Mills, located in Chattahoochee (now Atlanta), GA and owned by the Stevens family in the 1950's, manufactured cotton yarn, including yarn-wrapped fire hose, weaving yarn, and sewing thread. Also contains a notebook from an unidentified compiler possibly from the 1940's with cost comparisons, cost analyses and inventories for various mills associated with the Ames Worsted Co. including U.S. Bunting Co. and Walsh Worsted Mills, Lowell, MA; Hamilton Woolen Co., Southbridge, MA; Lawrence Worsted Yarn Division, Lawrence, MA; Maine Spinning Co., Skowhegan, ME; and the Richmond Worsted Co., Richmond, ME.

Biographical / Historical
The Ames Textile Corporation, located in Lowell, MA, manufactured cotton knitted goods, wool and blended yarn for knitters and weavers, worsted and blended fabrics for men's wear and uniforms, plain jersey and fancy knit fabrics for dresses and suits, and woolen spun fabrics for women's clothing. The company was formed in 1955 by the merger of the Lawrence Manufacturing Co. and the Ames Worsted Co. The Lawrence Manufacturing Co. manufactured cotton industrial knit fabric and automotive fabrics. The Ames Worsted Co. was established in 1921 by C. Brooks Stevens; the U.S. Bunting Co. merged with it in 1936. Ames Textile is now located in Christiansburg, VA and produces specialty yarns/threads. It is owned by 3a Throwing, a Canadian company.
