Scope and Contents
A. G. Ritchie, Glendinning, McLeish & Company Records includes a letter from Ritchie, an employee of Glendinning, McLeish & Company, New York City and Belfast, Northern Ireland, in which he writes about the closing of the company, a manufacturer and importer of handkerchiefs and linen. The letter gives a history of the company and outlines factors leading to its closing, including problems with foreign competition and the increased use of facial tissues instead of handkerchiefs. It contains interesting comments about the industry during World War I and World War II, manufacturing in Puerto Rico in the 1920's, China in the 1930's, and in Ireland, Spain, Madeira and Switzerland. The letter is accompanied by a pamphlet entitled "The Story of an Irish Industry," about Glendinning, McLeish & Company in Belfast. The pamphlet has a bookplate, January 31, 1952, commemorating Ritchie's 51st anniversary with the company.
