Biographical / Historical
The American Woolen Company was founded in 1899 under the direction of William M. Wood and Frederick Ayer. In the 1920s the company owned and operated 60 woolen mills, at which time it controlled 20% of the U.S. woolen production. Despite several changes in ownership, the American Woolen Company is still in operation and is a designer, manufacturer and distributor of men's and women's worsted and woolen fabrics. Based in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, the company operates from the 160-year-old Warren Mills, which it acquired from Loro Piana SpA in June 2014.
