This collections consists of seven passenger conductor's record books. They belonged to E. C. Halbrooks and document the passenger runs between El Paso, Texas and Tuscon, Arizona on the Southern Pacific Railroad's Sunset Limited and the Golden State Limited. The books are hand-written, and contain such information as the names of the conductor, fireman, and brakeman. They also give the date of each trip and the departure and arrival times of the train. Additionally, the books contain the locomotive road numbers of all engines and the road numbers of other rolling stock, i.e. the consist. There are also notes about various passengers on the train, including their eventual destination and the cars in which they were travelling.

Biographical / Historical

The Sunset Route is a passenger train line that runs along the southern transcontinetal route across the United States from New Orleans to Los Angeles. Currently operated by Amtrack, the passenger line was operated by the Southern Pacific Railroad from 1894-1971. The Sunset Limited was the premier passenger train for Southern Pacific. In addition to the Sunset Limited, the Southern Pacific Railroad also operated the Golden State Limited passenger train in conjunction with the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The Golden State Limited ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. The trains consisted of Pullman Cars, coach cars, mail cars, dining cars, and baggage cars.
