Scope and Contents
Black-and-white image of the interior of a small house in the city of Srinigar (Cashmere). Shown is the proprietor and overseer of the establishment in the white headdress in the background. Also shown are a father and son in the laborious process of "setting up" or placing the warp threads. Comb-like rods (heddles) are shown in front of the workers. Just two or three generations ago the shawl weaving in Cashmere was one of the most properous and profitable industries in all of India; now (1904) the industry is almost extinct.
