Item 4: Retting flax, Courtrai, Belgium
Scope and Contents
Black and white image shows workers preparing to soak the bunches of flax stems that have been dried in the field and then stacked during the winter. After soaking in the river for two weeks, the outer bark can be removed from the inner fibre, which is used for producing flax and linen. Courtrai is the center of the Belgian linen industry.
