Letters received, 1914-16 and 1995. Most of the early letters were set by his mother, Mary (Hendy) Carpenter, or his sister, Alice Carpenter, while they were apart due to his parents’ separation.

Letters sent, 1917 and n.d. A letter to “Mrs. Landon” written at Oak Street School, 1917, apparently a class exercise; and an undated note to “papa” while he was still with his mother, opening with “I am verry lonesome with out you.”
