Profile left of the Marquis de Lafayette, signed DAVID 1830 under bust, with "Le General Lafayette" running vertically (read sideways) in the right field. A political friend of Lafayette (cf. box 31, folder 9, and passim), French sculptor Pierre-Jean David d'Angers (1789-1856) sought to portray "contemporary heroes" with an expressive force that could appeal to a wide audience within the bourgeoisie.
