ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

The Ithaca Branch of the American Association of University Women was founded in 1918. Prominent Ithaca, New York women have participated in the organization, including Helen Magill White, Anna B. Comstock, Margaret K. Carleton Farrand, and Jennie Farley. The AAUW's Legal Advocacy Fund grew out of the Ithaca Branch's fundraising for the legal expenses of the Cornell Eleven from 1980-1984.

The City Federation of Women's Organizations was founded in 1910 by a group of women "concerned with education, recreation, philanthropy, health, safety and civic betterment." Initially it provided housing for women as well as coordination among the dozens of women's organizations in Ithaca. For many years it owned the Women's Community Building downtown, which included meeting rooms, a small library, and an auditorium for community events. Since the 1960s, the number of local women's organizations in the CFWO has shrunk to about a dozen. The Women's Community Building was sold in 2012 to make room for an apartment building to provide much-needed affordable housing. The CFWO now administers an endowment to help support the work of its member organizations.
