COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Papers of the Treman family of Tompkins County, New York, contain business and family material, including correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, and printed matter of Elias Treman and his wife Elizabeth Lovejoy Treman, Robert H. Treman, Charles E. Treman, Robert E. Treman, and Allan H. Treman. Papers of Robert H. (Cornell University Class of 1878) and Robert E. (Cornell University Class of 1909) Treman concerning Cornell, collected during their years as University Trustees, 1891-1953; also, Class of 1878 programs, correspondence, and other items. Account books of Treman Brothers Hardware, Trumansburg, 1838-1839, and miscellaneous business papers of Treman and King Hardware, Ithaca, 1845-1900; Renney family material, 1855-1869; Ithaca, New York memorabilia; Tornado Hook and Ladder Company items; diaries and scrapbooks of travel in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States; Presbyterian Church material; and Ithaca architect William Henry Miller's blueprints and specifications, ca. 1901, for the residence of Robert H. Treman.

Charles E. Treman Papers, 1910-1930 consist of two scrapbooks (July 1910-December 1911) containing clippings, photographs, and other items pertaining to his work as New York State Superintendent of Public Works (1911); also correspondence in the scrapbooks and additional loose correspondence (1911-1918) including letters from New York State Attorney General Thomas Carmody, Governor John Alden Dix, Alton Brooks Parker, Horace White, and other political figures, two letters from Andrew Dickson White, blaming poor health for his inability to attend a testimonial dinner for Treman and praising Treman for his work as Superintendent of Public Works (Jan. 12, 1912), and contaning a discussion of a photograph of himself which White sent to Treman (April 11, 1914), and a letter from Liberty Hyde Bailey (June 5, 1914) complimenting Treman for the way he handled the College of Agriculture appropriations for 1914.
