Biographical / Historical

David S. Powers is a Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Cornell University and an Adjunct Professor at the Cornell Law School. Powers was born on July 23, 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1979 and began teaching at Cornell the same year. His research focuses on the emergence of Islam and Islamic legal history. His courses deal with Islamic civilization, Islamic history and law, and classical Arabic texts. He is founding editor of the journal Islamic Law and Society.
