Biographical / Historical
Ed Sanders (born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1939) is an American poet, singer, social activist, environmentalist, author, and publisher, and long time member of the band the Fugs. In 1962 he founded the periodical Fuck you, which was printed on a mimeograph machine. He and Tuli Kupferberg founded the Fugs in late 1964. In the same period, Sanders also founded the Peace Eye Bookstore in what was then the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Some years later he started the Investigative Poetry movement, writing a manifesto for it in 1976 (published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti's City Lights Books). Sanders has received many literary awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship in poetry in 1983 and a National Endowment of the Arts fellowship in poetry in 1987.
