COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Collection includes manuscripts and typescripts of three novels THE SHEEPFOLD, THE OUTPOSTS OF COLD, and BRIEF CANDLE, short stories, poetry, reviews, critiques, and essays; polemics; literary studies; notes; student work; broadsides; correspondence and other records concerning "Epoch" and "Cornell Review"; correspondence (approximately one quarter of the collection) to and from Hathaway, particularly with David Ray, B.H. Friedman, and editors and publishers;

material concerning the 1938 Michigan Hopwood Award, including submissions by Hathaway and "A.J. Joachim"; curriculum studies; drafts of textbooks; and publications and newsletters concerning national and international writing programs and humanities programs.

The collection is well described by Hathaway's "I am interested in grammar, rhetoric, and poetics, intellectual and cultural history. I have spent much time on the development of poets and novelists, on modern literary aesthetics, on the editing of a literary magazine, on my own variety of transformational grammar, and on the literary criticism of the Renaissance and Neo-classical period.

"I am also interested in work/study collaborations at Ithaca House, in publishing techniques and practices and the small press revolution."
