ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY
Paul Rapoport (1940-1987) helped to found the New York LGBT Community Center and also Gay Men's Health Crisis, the first community-based AIDS organization in the United States. He also helped to raise funds for SAGE, the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, and other community organizations in New York City. He died from AIDS-related causes in 1987.
The Paul Rapoport Foundation was created following Paul Rapoport's death in 1987. It awards grants to support LGBT and related community initiatives and organizations. In the face of financial straits brought on by the recession of 2008, the Foundation's leaders decided to spend down the organization's funds in a series of large, multi-year grants through 2014. The Foundation closed in 2015.
