COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Correspondence, diaries, deeds, account books, poems and photographs of the Frank Botsford family of the Town of Jerusalem, Yates Co., New York. Includes information concerning the growth, education, and careers of Frank and Alice Ansley Botsford's seven children and their respective families; correspondence with several other families, including the Ansleys and the Vails; books read by the Botsford children; Frank Botsford's poetry and articles on Indians of Yates County and local history; records concerning Botsford's investments and inventions, and his service as a school trustee, 1895, 1908-11; material on the New York State Fruit Growers' Association and other agricultural groups; Alice Ansley Botsford's poetry, short stories, and scrapbooks; original deeds to the Botsford family farm; Frank's daily records (1884-1909); and a map/survey (1851) of the Gould Farm, near Italy Hill Road. Also, mortgages, promissory notes, insurance policies, diaries (1850-1926), and undated notebooks; genealogies of the Ansley, Botsford, and Spangler families; newspaper clippings and other printed material concerning family members and local history; broadsides and memorabilia.

Also, additional papers include correspondence between Myrtie Botsford Ruggiero and Wilfred F. Ruggiero before and after their marriage, including World War II letters and V-mail; correspondence of Margaret Scott Botsford with her parents and other family members and friends; account books; photograph albums and photographs; and printed material.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Frank Botsford, the son of Samuel Botsford (1809-1888), was born in Jerusalem, New York and spent his life farming in the community. He was known for his involvement in community affairs and for his collection of Indian artifacts. He and his wife, Alice Ansley Botsford (1867-1950), had seven children: Anna E. (Mrs. L. Bridge), Elizabeth (Mrs. C. Ingvolstad), Franklin A., Margaret S., Mary (Mrs. H.T. Wilder), Myrtie (Mrs. W.F. Ruggiero), and Samuel.

Earlier members of the Botsford family moved to New York State from Milford, Connecticut because of their belief in "The Universal Friend," Jemima Wilkinson.
