Biographical / Historical

Elizabeth Twining was an English artist and illustrator best known for her botanical illustrations. Among other works, she illustrated the two-volume publication Natural Order of Plants, which was published between 1849 and 1855. Born into the wealthy Twinings family of tea merchants, she was also a notable philanthropist, establishing the St John's Hospital for the treatment of the poor, and contributing to the founding of London's Bedford College for Women (1849), the first higher education college for women in the United Kingdom.
