Biographical / Historical
The Ithaca, New York office was established in 1982, with the first grant being made to Cornell University to start the Cornell Tradition. Initially, Mr. Feeney recommended the following program areas: Higher Education, PreĀ Collegiate Education, Children and Youth, Aging and Health, Philanthropy and Volunteerism, and International Activities. Program areas were diverse in the early years, and declined in number as Atlantic Philanthropies began to focus on areas where their grantmaking would have its biggest impact. Before the Ithaca office closed in 2005, it was responsible for the majority of grants administered in the United States.
