"Tu as bien raison, mon cher ami, de penser que les états généraux sont le grand objet national… " Writing shortly after it was announced that the Etats généraux would be convened in May 1789, Lafayette expresses concern about the long delay, coming at a time when the nation is bankrupt and the people are suffering. But he is hopeful for a good outcome to the process.
