COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

From the Collection:

Collection contains 45 field notebooks from Moore's southeastern archaeological investigations. Moore seems to have developed a system where he recorded his on-site information in a small notebook, and later transferred the data in a more polished form to larger notebooks which he then used as the text for his publications. The smaller notebooks often contain details which were eliminated from the larger texts. They have site lists appended. The large format notebooks include both site lists and alphabetical indices. Most of his field notes are from excavations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. He also conducted limited field work in Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi River, Missouri, and South Carolina. His notes contain information about the finds and the conditions under which they were excavated, providing locality data and details about the artifacts. Information includes sketches of the site, detailed information about layout and descriptions of unearthed objects, such as jewelry and pottery. Some notebooks also have weather reports for the days of the excavations. Also included is a dictionary of archaeological terms, with bibliographic citations, and some correspondence. Correspondents include Dr. Milo G. Miller and George W. Rossignol. Rossignol correspondence includes information regarding a proposed expedition to Red River, Texas and to Arkansas in 1899. Published guide included. Moore's publications based on his artifacts and field notes were housed in the Museum of the American Indian Library. The artifacts were located in the museum as well.
