Menus, de Grasse Location: Greece, 1951
Scope and Contents
My parents wanted me to experience Europe as they had known it. They saw that almost all transatlantic crossings would soon be by plane. They chose to cross first class on the slowest French line ship (10 days to Portsmouth) the de Grasse, known for superb cuisine to make up for lack of speed. I longed to be in 3rd class where young people seemed to have fun. At least I got to dance with Alec Waugh (Evelyn's brother) at the captain's dinner though he eventually reconciled on asking my age. I was 14.
