Scope and Contents
Eight days prior to his death, Roosevelt sends greetings to All Souls Universalist Church, Brooklyn. He then states, "not one of the least of our cherished freedoms is freedom of conscience. It is a cornerstone of our national happiness -- a freedom which we are now defending and shall always defend as a bullwork of democracy and civilization." Also includes letter from Matthew Connelly to Cornelius Greenway, Acknowledgement of Greenway's letter of April 21, 1945, probably requesting a message from the President, which had already been sent before Roosevelt's death (dated April 27, 1945).
