COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

From the Collection:

Consists mainly of letters by, to, or about Charles Nodier and his circle, with some manuscripts of essays and poems by Nodier and others, printed articles and pamphlets, documents, clippings, photographs, and glass-plate negatives. Letters and manuscripts in particular document the beginnings of the Romantic movement in French literature. Topics of letters include personal, social, bibliographic, literary, publishing, and financial matters. Manuscripts by Nodier document his bibliographic and literary work and his botanical and entomological researches; also included are manuscripts by Nodier's friend Charles Weiss, and manuscripts of a few poems by Nodier's daughter, Dame Marie Antoinette Elisabeth Mennessier-Nodier. Includes journals kept by Weiss from 1804-1810, 1817-1846, and 1859-1862; a typewritten manuscript by Edmund Duban on biographical materials about Weiss, and bound typewritten manuscripts of Duban's dissertations on Nodier and on Weiss (Sorbonne, 1952); biographical material on Mme. Mennessier-Nodier, compiled by Duban; and genealogical information on Nodier and Mme. Mennessier-Nodier. Printed materials include a political pamphlet issued in self-defense by Nodier and his associates Monnot, Baud, Weiss, and Desplaces in 1802, and the text of books and articles by and about Nodier.

Correspondence includes many letters to Charles Weiss from Nodier, Xavier Marmier, Pierre Lacroix, and Bruno Monnot, and letters from a variety of correspondents to Justin Girod-Chantrans. Also included is official correspondence of the French police about Nodier and his movements from 1808-1809. Other correspondents include Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve, Nodier's father Antoine Melchior Nodier, A.A. Renouard, Joseph Van Praet, Louis Barbier, Jean-Joseph Pallu, Gabriel Peignot, Auguste Demesmay, Dame Marie Antoinette Elisabeth Mennessier-Nodier, Nodier's mother Suzanne (Paris) Nodier, Désiré Monnier, Charles Laumier, Cordienne, Charles de Bernard, Jean Gigoux, and Charles Magnin. Also included are four letters from Alfred de Musset to Mme. Mennessier-Nodier.
