Series VI. Polish Revolution

 Series

Scope and Contents

The French people overwhelmingly supported the Poles when, in 1831, Polish patriots rose up against Imperial Russia. When they lost the war, many took refuge in France. As the president of the most important of these committees,La Comité en Faveur de la Cause Polonaise, Lafayette was the recipient of most of these subscriptions, which came from individuals and societies alike. Lafayette corresponded with supporters and with Polish leaders such as Niemjowski, Niemciewicz and Ostrowski.
